Welcome to Our Course on Understanding Emotions
Emotions play a powerful role in shaping our lives. They influence how we experience the world, how we connect with others, and how we respond to both joyful and traumatic events. Whether brief or long-lasting, emotions are a natural and essential part of being human.
In this course, we’ll explore how emotions impact our everyday lives and how developing emotional awareness can lead to healthier relationships, better decision-making, and improved well-being.
Why Are Emotions Important?
Emotions help us:
Cope with trauma and stress
Enjoy life’s positive moments
Adapt to changes and challenges
Modify behavior for safety and growth
Trigger physical responses in our body
Store and access memories
Navigate relationships and social settings
Reflect on our experiences
Learn and grow from situations
When emotional development is healthy, we’re better able to express our feelings appropriately and regulate our responses. This allows us to recover more easily from emotional triggers and use our feelings as tools for growth.
On the other hand, if emotional development is disrupted—especially early in life—our emotions may become overwhelming or unpredictable, negatively affecting our mental health and daily functioning.
The Six Core Emotions
While there are many types of emotions, this course focuses on six basic ones that form the foundation of emotional experience across cultures:
Fear
Anger
Sadness
Disgust
Surprise
Happiness
These core emotions influence how we behave, interact with others, and process the world around us. Although human emotions can be complex, research shows that these six are universally recognized and deeply rooted in human behavior.
